Sandinistas – Contras – Confiscations – Stability – The Debate Ensues… What is your Opinion on Daniel Ortega?

Here is some very interesting information from a resident of San Juan del Sur in Nicaragua.  You may be surprised at what follows:

Daniel Ortega

Where is he taking Nicaragua?

(A six month update.)

Daniel Ortega

(An analysis of the first 6 month of his term)

The fear by some that Daniel Ortega would take the country back to the dark days where he implemented a state-run economy, nationalized properties to give to landless peasants, and fought U.S.-backed Contra fighters seems to have been unjustified.

Since the long-time Sandinista leader returned as the country’s president on January 10, 2007, the 61-year old Daniel Ortega has implemented a program to help the poor. This program is designed to create incentives for poor farmers to grow food to feed their families and then sell any extra for a profit.

He repeatedly said that foreign investment is needed to end poverty and to propel Nicaragua forward.

Even before his election Ortega said “There is not even a thought of confiscations.” He said repeatedly “Foreign investment will help reduce our unemployment problem.”

This is a special update that includes economic data and reports on the political and social status of Nicaragua.
